2017 Summit at Williams College

The Transformative Power of Race in the Academy:
Measuring Change, Charting Futures

The C3 Summit took place Friday, April 21 to Sunday, April 23, 2017
at Williams College in Williamstown, MA

Welcome to the 2017 Creating Connections Consortium (C3) Summit! Hosted by Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, the Summit brings together participants from both liberal arts colleges and research universities.

The Creating Connections Consortium is a cross-institutional collaboration among liberal arts colleges and research universities dedicated to progressing the goals of inclusion and full participation in the academy. We are especially focused on facilitating pathways into graduate study and the professoriate for a diverse group of undergraduate and graduate students, and on initiating and introducing cross-institutional structures that will build and support these changes in the culture of higher education.

At the past two Summits, more than four hundred undergraduates, graduates, postdoctoral fellows, faculty, administrators, and special guests gathered to collectively focus on diversity and innovation in the academy.

Building on the 2015 Summit, “Practicing Communities: The Transformative Power of Race in the Academy,” this year we seek to assess the institutional transformation we explored at the last two Summits. Our framing questions and goals include: What are our current goals and tools for institutional transformation? What is the relationship between racial justice activism and academia? How do we move from vision to action, and what are the roles of students in this process?

Broader goals for this year’s action-packed Summit include: Providing opportunities for intellectual development and communion, skill and strategy building, fostering mutual learning, and developing strong and sustainable networks between participants.
