2015 Summit at Bates College

Practicing Communities: The Transformative Power of Race in the Academy

The 2015 C3 Summit took place Friday, November 13, 2015,
to Sunday, November 15, 2015, in
Lewiston, Maine.

Welcome to the 2015 Creating Connections Consortium (C3) Summit! This year’s Summit will be hosted by Bates, a liberal arts college founded in 1855 by abolitionists that has since its founding been firmly and progressively committed to the principles of equity and inclusion.

The Creating Connections Consortium is a cross-institutional collaboration among liberal arts colleges and research universities dedicated to progressing the goals of inclusion and full participation in the academy. We are especially focused on facilitating pathways into graduate study and the professoriate for a diverse group of undergraduate and graduate students, and on initiating and introducing cross-institutional structures that will build and support these changes in the culture of higher education.

Each year, approximately a hundred and fifty undergraduates, graduates, postdoctoral fellows, faculty, administrators, and special guests gather to be in communion and collectively focus on diversity and innovation in the academy.

Building on last year’s inaugural summit, “Launching Transformation,” this year we turn our attention to the critical issues of race and community in the academy. Among our framing questions and goals: analyzing how race functions in the university as an ideology, a topic of discourse, as a mechanism of structuring knowledge, a system of power, and as one way we form community, or not.

Broader goals for this year’s action-packed Summit include: Providing opportunities for intellectual development and communion, skill and strategy building, fostering mutual learning, and developing strong and sustainable networks between participants.

We look forward to seeing you in November!

Sincerely,
Crystal A. Williams
